Best New Indie Trailers: ‘Elena,’ ‘Good People,’ ‘The Moment,’ and ‘Creative Control’

By Laura Frances - ScreenCrave – 5/14/2014

The Brooklyn Film Festival, ‘Elena’ and More in This Week’s Repertory Film

We tend to hate on Hollywood studios because of the movie projects they choose to fund (Transformers 4, anyone?). So much of typical Hollywood product tends to be huge, expensive spectacles with little-to-no story, heavy special effects and poor acting. So, we at ScreenCrave have decided to help jump behind the indie film. Below you’ll find some of the best indie trailers of the week, plus unknown projects featured on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that need your help to get made. Check out this week’s picks below.

ELENA: Petra Costa‘s Elena is a personal documentary that details the disappearance of the filmmaker’s older sister. When Costa was only seven-years-old, her sister Elena moved to New York where she soon disappeared. Here’s an official synopsis: “Elena, a young Brazilian woman, travels to New York with the same dream as her mother, to become a movie actress. She leaves behind her childhood spent in hiding during the years of the military dictatorship. She also leaves Petra, her seven year old sister. Two decades later, Petra also becomes an actress and goes to New York in search of Elena. She only has a few clues about her: home movies, newspaper clippings, a diary and letters. At any moment Petra hopes to find Elena walking in the streets in a silk blouse. Gradually, the features of the two sisters are confused; we no longer know one from the other. When Petra finally finds Elena in an unexpected place, she has to learn to let her go.” Elena first premiered in 2012. Now, thanks to New York’s IFC Center, this powerful documentary will be able to see the light of day. The film will hit New York on May 30, and then expand to LA and other cities in the U.S. on June 13.

GOOD PEOPLE: James Franco and Kate Hudson are Good People, at least that’s what their new thriller wants you to believe. The two play a newlywed couple who’s struggling to make ends meet and suddenly find a bag filled with cash in their dead neighbor’s apartment. Sounds pretty generic right? Well, this actually looks pretty good because Tom Wilkinson shows up looking super cool, calm and collected. He plays a detective who wants to help Franco and Hudson’s character get out of trouble for stealing moment from a very bad guy, played by Omar Sy. The film was directed by Ruben Genz, and will open in theaters later this year.

THE MOMENT: Jennifer Jason Leigh is one of the most underrated actresses of our time. She’s incredibly talented but for some reason her movies don’t get her the recognition she deserves. In her latest film, The Moment, she plays a photojournalist who ends up in the mental hospital after the disappearance of her lover John, played by Martin Henderson. The psychological thriller was directed by Jane Weinstock (Easy), and premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.

CREATIVE CONTROL: Benjamin Dickson used Kickstarter to fund his first film First Winter, which played at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival to great reviews. Now he’s on to his next project, titled Creative Control, a near future satire about sex, technology and obsession. The film follows an ad executive who uses a new Augmented Reality technology to conduct an affair with his best friend’s girlfriend. The cast includes people like Nora Zehetner, Dan Gill, Alexia Rasmussen, Reggie Watts, and more. With this film, Dickson is trying to “push the envelope” of what people should expect out of an independent movie, and so he’s asking us for support. Head over to Kickstarter to find out more about this project, and also to see some cool footage from the movie.

Those are the projects we have for you this week. Be sure to check back every week for our Best Indie Film Trailers of the Week–helping you stay informed about indie cinema.
